4月26日 Audrey visits Maggie's houseAudrey got to go over to her friend Maggie's house for the first time today. Here's a 30-second video of Audrey just doing her thing. 4月5日 A letter from state Sen. Chuck GrahamMissouri Sen. Chuck Graham, who represents the district we live in, sent us this congratulatory letter this week.
He also included a clipping of Audrianna's Baby of the Week feature in the Missourian.
And in case you missed it in the last blog post, read all about how Audrianna is keeping us up at night.
It's an exciting day for us -- we're about to head to Ashland to check out some new cars. Unfortunately, it looks as if the Camry (lovingly referred to as White Lightning) is on its last legs. She's been a great car for Jenny's family since she was brand new, but now we need something with a little more room and a lot more reliability. We're thinking minivan. Hopefully we'll have some new car photos to show off soon.
In the meantime, if you know anybody in the market for a 1990 Camry ... 3月3日 Say hi to the babyWell, the baby is due in about 9 hours. This seems like a good time to ask everyone to submit their first hi, hello, how are you to her. Just leave a comment below. The baby is coming very, very soonIt's 4:32 p.m. CST as I start to write this, meaning the baby will be here in mere hours. About 15 hours, to be precise. Yes, I'm freaking out, but in the way a new father should. It's like Christmas morning times about a billion. I've never been this excited for something in my life. I almost ordered a shot at lunch today, just to calm my nerves. I've been mostly worthless at work today. I'm just taking up space, tying up a few loose ends and otherwise getting excited for the big day. I have a meeting in 25 minutes, then I'm out of here until next week. We're all ready to go. The hospital bags are packed. The alarm is set. The car seat is ready. Jenny is ready to give birth. We have our call list ready to go. I'm also hoping to post photos here at some point tomorrow. And the name will finally be revealed. It will be a big day. ![]() 2月26日 Watch the baby move!We have a limited window to catch Baby Sherlock moving before she is born a week from now. So far, so good. Check this: 2月25日 A big baby (update)If anyone has any doubts about Jenny's uterus, those have been answered. Last Tuesday, our baby was estimated to weigh 8 pounds, 5 ounces.
That puts her above the 90th percentile for size. That also means she'll likely outweigh both her mom (7 pounds, 11 ounces) and me (7 pounds, 13 ounces) in the birth-weight department. And lastly, it also means that all those cute 0-3 month outfits she has will be lucky to see one, maybe two, wearings.
But, compared to where we were at last summer, when we weren't sure if Jenny's bicorniate uterus would carry a baby to term, this is very welcome news. But, maybe not so much for my bride.
Jenny is getting over a bout of the flu, which you can read about here in my latest Missourian column. She's also ready to have this baby. She has felt contractions for the last few nights, but so far the baby seems content to ride out this last week in the womb. She's coming out next Tuesday (March 4) whether she likes it or not; that's the day we have a C-section scheduled.
Sorry for the lack of ultrasound photos, but the prints we received the last two weeks aren't very good, so I haven't posted them. But the news has been positive at those ultrasounds: fluids perfect, heartbeat perfect, etc. etc. Jenny has done a tremendous job taking care of herself and the baby for these 10 months.
Jenny has several doctor appointments tomorrow, including one with the OB, another with the prenatal care specialist, plus she's going to the neighborhood pharmacy to learn how to pump breast milk. Her last day of work is Friday; she goes back to work on May 1. My paternity leave starts April 28 and lasts until Memorial Day.
As for me, I've been busy with freelance work, clearing projects off my plate at the job and a few little household chores here and there. I've also really been addicted to The Sims recently, to the point it's kind of ridiculous. I really need to find a new hobby. Oh wait, I have one on the way.
And with that, I leave you with proof that Jimmy Kimmel is a comic god:
2月5日 Super Tuesday baby photo! Guaranteed cuter than Obama group hugging with Clinton, Romney, Huckabee and McCainAnd let me throw Ron Paul's name in the first sentence, as I shamelessly try to tie in Super Tuesday search engine words to bring people to the ol' Shapin' Up blog (hey, remember when I use to write about health and fitness? Me neither.).
So why the attempt to bring more traffic? Well, today's ultrasound produced the most adorable photo, and I want the world to see it.
But before we get to that, here is today's vital stats: 35 weeks, everything looked great, although she did give her mom a case of the worries when she had to be "buzzed" a few times into moving (and by "buzzed," I mean they put a little buzzer to Jenn's belly to coax the baby out of sleeping and into wiggling around). Of course, this is after she spent all morning moving around while Jenny caught up on her beauty rest (yes, we're enjoying it while we still can). So really, no surprise she wasn't moving much after all that activity this morning.
And now, on to the best ultrasound picture yet. This is her actually looking at the camera. She seems to have quite a bit of hair too -- Jenny said she may even come out with a mullet. I guess that would be my karma for all the fun I made of Denise on Survivor last season. But c'mon, the mullet. Really?
Here's the baby. What do you think?
![]() 1月29日 That baby is a growerWe had our next-to-last weigh in for the baby today during the ultrasound. She came in at a whopping 5 pounds, 15 ounces, quite the growth from her 4 pounds, 1 ounce of three weeks ago.
Some friends in Columbia that we work with threw a shower for us this weekend. Click here to see a photo album at my new PhotoBucket account.
And now, a picture of the baby:
1月23日 Jenny felt some contractions todayJenny called me on her way to Dr. Grant's office today to let me know she had felt some cramping and thought it best to go visit our doctor before closing time, just in case something was wrong with the baby.
The good news: Everything is fine. But it is a reminder that we're very, very close to having this kid. The contractions she felt were, in her words, "very minor, very light." In fact, by the time she got to the doctor's office, she said she started second-guessing whether she should have even gone. The doctor put her in for a stress test anyway, and some light contractions did register on the test. But the contractions were minor, and Jenny said Dr. Grant wasn't too worried about it. If she feels them again, the doctor told her to drink s ome water and sit down for a while until they pass. If they get stronger, he said to either come to the office or, if it's after hours, to head to the hospital. So everything is still good. Jenny couldn't stress that enough to me on the phone (I'm a nervous wreck about the baby if there's even a slight hint of a problem), so I want to stress it here: All is well. She's just letting us know she'll be here soon. I can't wait.
Powered by ScribeFire. 1月8日 Second baby update of the dayWe had an ultrasound this afternoon with Dr. Grant. Unfortunately, no photos of the baby girl this time. Hopefully next week we'll get some.
She weighed in at 4 pounds, 1 ounce this afternoon. She's getting to be a big girl. We found out the other night she really likes homemade biscuits and gravy -- after chowing down on that, Jenny said she could feel a higher amount of movement than normal.
We're also in the market for a pediatrician, which we have to have in order to schedule the C-section. Dr. Grant gave us two recommendations, including the man who is the pediatrician for his own daughter (though he did say we might want to consider a woman -- not so much for now, but for when the baby girl starts to become a woman, if you're pickin' up what I'm puttin' down). He also offered this bit of advice: Don't call the pediatrician's office to ask if they're taking new patients. Just tell our obstetrician, Dr. Womack, the name of our future pediatrician. That puts us in his system, and if he bounces us Dr. Grant said he'd make a personal plea on our behalf.
We're big fans of Dr. Grant. We were a little bummed he no longer does deliveries. But we're also confident in Dr. Womack. We just really get along well with Dr. Grant.
Wow. Three blogs in one day. I've gone blog crazy. Jenny is scheduled for a C-sectionJenny has a twi-night doubleheader of doctor appointments today. At this morning's appointment, Dr. Womack told her that she's going to schedule her for a C-section around March 4. The reason: The baby has been breech every time we've had an ultrasound, and Dr. Womack doesn't think that's going to change in the last eight or nine weeks (March 4 is only eight weeks away). She wants to schedule the C-section for about a week ahead of our March 11 due date. We should know the exact date in the next week, depending on when they can work Jenny in. There's still a chance she could go into labor early, but last week our other doctor, Dr. Grant, said he thought the baby would likely go to term. The fact Jenny has had zero complications since the big, scary night back in July leads him to believe the kid will at least get close to the due date. Bottom line: The latest she'll be here is around March 4, depending on when the C-section gets scheduled. If anything changes after our ultrasound later this afternoon, I'll update you all. Powered by ScribeFire. 12月31日 New ultrasound photos!Today was a really good news day at the doctor. New Year's Day will mark our little girl's 30th week in the womb, and at this point our doctor is quite confident she'll go to term. There was a lot of fear at the beginning of the pregnancy that she might come early due to Jenny's uturus being how it is (read more about that here). What's more, if we continue to have a smooth pregnancy, that bodes well for a second kid down the road.
Here are today's photos:
12月29日 New column about the baby over at the MissourianI have a new column up at ColumbiaMissourian.com today, which is all about our hunt for a baby name. Click here to check it out. ![]() Powered by ScribeFire. 12月18日 Another ultrasound, another good day for babyWe had a good day at the doctor again this week. Everything continues to look fine for the baby, and she's really starting to grow. She weighed in this week at 2 pounds, 10 ounces, up nearly a pound from her last weight measurement on Nov. 20. The doctor said she's in the 70th percentile as far as weight, which is bigger than average. I had originally written bigger than normal in my notebook, but the nurse -- who happens to be the mother of one of my MU students -- corrected me. No surprise, that she'd be bigger than average. After all, look who her daddy is. Today marks 28 weeks. Sometime in the next 12 weeks, we'll have a new person living at our house. She'll probably look at least a little like this: 12月4日 Our latest ultrasoundToday was our last ultrasound at Dr. Grant's old office.
The baby is still doing great. I'll post pictures soon. Work is kicking my butt right now, but I hope to be dug out soon.
At our next one on Dec. 17, we'll be at his new office one building over. We'll also have some insurance crap I have to remember to deal with. MU is switching to a different provider, and Dr. Grant is dropping the current provider. The only problem is, he's dropping the current provider before MU switches me to the new provider, who Grant works with. Confused? So am I.
Anyway, I have to beg our current insurance to pony up the money for medically necessary ultrasounds even though they're technically off the hook because of poor timing. That's going to be fun.
It's late, I'm pooped. Not much of a blog, but the good news is the baby is healthy. And we only have about three months to go. 11月29日 Slideshow of the nurseryJenny has been hard at work on the nursery. Here's a short slideshow I put together of how it's coming along: ![]() Technorati Tags: Baby Sherlock, Jake Sherlock, Jenny Sherlock Powered by ScribeFire. 11月13日 The new mattressThis is one I wrote nearly two months ago, but for some reason never posted until today. When it comes to having children, men have one simple job for the entire nine months: Keep the mother-to-be happy. Easy, right? All you have to do is be a sympathetic ear when she’s uncomfortable; provide her with weird combinations of food when she has one of those famed pregnancy cravings; and occasionally pull her hair back during the morning sickness phase. So far, I’ve learned all that is just the tip of the iceberg. In fairness, my wife, Jenny, is pretty low-maintenance. She doesn’t get morning sickness, a hereditary trait she apparently inherited from her mother. She does require a sympathetic ear when she’s uncomfortable, but she’s really good about satisfying her own food cravings, whether it be a run to Dairy Queen for some soft serve or to the grocery store for a jar of pickles. At least she hasn’t started combining the two – yet. Then there are the little things nobody can anticipate. Like when Jenny started telling me the mattress on our bed wasn’t comfortable for her anymore and she wanted a new one. We have a king-size bed, and a king-size mattress doesn’t come cheap. She had wanted one of those fancy Sleep Number mattresses, but I put the kibosh on that once I saw the price. Then I looked up the price on a regular mattress and realized the Sleep Numbers aren’t that much more expensive. So I was elated the day she called to tell me she had found a really comfortable mattress at a yard sale for only $250. I was even happier when she told me it was new and still wrapped in plastic. If there’s one thing Jenny is an expert at, it’s finding a good deal. That’s when the hard part began. Jenny is no slouch when it comes to getting her hands dirty. When we moved to Missouri, we packed and unpacked our own U-Haul with just the two of us. But now that she’s with child, the idea of her helping to push a mattress up the stairs didn’t sit too well with me. She helped anyway, but I provided most of the muscle. Or should I say, too much muscle. While pushing the large mattress up our narrow staircase to the bedroom, our new purchase got caught on a wall fixture that normally holds the hand railing (I had taken it off the wall to paint it and hadn’t put it back on yet). Unable to really see what I was doing, I just kept pulling and tugging on the mattress until it was on the second floor. It wasn’t until we went to put it on the bed that I realized I had ripped out the entire bottom of it. The new mattress now sits on top of the old one, which makes it a little scary for me to sleep on – falling off the observation deck at the Grand Canyon would be a shorter fall. It’s also taking me quite a while to adjust to the softer surface – after the first few nights, I was wishing I had sprung for the Sleep Number. But Jenny loves the new soft mattress, and she is sleeping much better because of it. And after a few nights, I was able to sleep a little easier too. ![]() Technorati Tags: baby, Jenny, mattress Powered by ScribeFire. 11月8日 Nov. 8 ultrasound updateNothing but good, good news to report from today's ultrasound. Everything looks great with mother and baby. In fact, the doctor even said "perfect" at the end of the exam.
Here are the vital stats:
And we have two new ultrasound photos to share:
10月23日 The latest ultrasoundWe found out today we're having a girl!!!!! Check out the photos from the latest ultrasound. I'll have a full column on this over at ColumbiaMissourian.com come Friday afternoon. I'm really beat at this hour, so here are the down-and-dirty details: -- It's a girl. Just like I've been saying all along on this very blog. Just had to get a subtle "I told you so" in there. -- The bloodwork the doctor took from Jenny two weeks ago show a healthy baby, as does the ultrasound. -- Jenny will get ultrasounds every other week until just before Christmas. After that, she's in there weekly. This is to keep close track of the baby in light of Jenny's bicornuate uterus. -- All of the grandparents are thrilled to learn they're getting a granddaughter. And they're just as excited as they would be if it were a boy. -- Yes, the next baby needs to be a boy. ![]() |
